This week, Luke's Project 52 Clinic of Michigan and Blue Cross Blue Shield Detroit launched the Mobile Antenatal Testing Pilot Program to provide free weekly antenatal testing in the homes of vulnerable patients in Detroit, increasing compliance, achieving better outcomes and reducing costs.

Lukas Project 52 Clinic was awarded $75,000 by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to expand its mobile maternal and child health program in Detroit, adding equipment and outreach vehicles to provide prenatal care to pregnant women. Funding is provided through Blue Cross' Strengthening the Safety Net program, which helps local safety net providers offer free or low-cost medical, dental and mental health care to uninsured and underinsured Michigan residents.
"Detroit's infant mortality rate (13.1) is significantly higher than the national average (5.6) and even higher among African-American women (14.1)," said Rev. Brad Garrison RPh, executive director of the Luke Project 52 clinic.

In 2016, he helped launch the Luka clinic. Luke's Clinic provides free prenatal and infant care to vulnerable families in Detroit. The infant mortality rate in Detroit, where the clinic is based, dropped from 16.7 deaths per 1,000 births in 2019 to 11 per 1,000 births, but the problem that created Detroit's high rate compared to the rest of the country is complicated.
Armbruster believes it's a matter of trust. Instead of bringing the patient to the culture of the provider, Lukas Clinic brings the provider to the patient. They do that with a mobile ambulance operation in the Detroit area
"The real key is breaking down the barriers to care so we can get them in the clinic consistently," Armbruster said.
Quinn, who was one of the first patients at Luke's Clinic in Detroit, said she wouldn't be where she is today without the support the clinic and Armbruster gave her.

Queen lives with her children at Mercy House, a women's shelter in Flint for young mothers and children. Mercy House is another partner of the Luke Clinic and the Franklin Avenue Mission.
The 32-year-old bride will give birth to her fourth child in August. Camden, Justice and Kaiden all say they can't wait to meet their baby sister.

"They threw me my first baby shower and I was able to get everything I needed (from Cam)," Quinn said. “She had a baby swing, a bed, clothes and gift cards – everything I needed or wanted, they provided for me.

Armbruster and Luke's Clinic are even working to reunite Queen's children in Flint as a family. Each of them is in a different location in the Detroit area.
"They did that," Quince said as he watched his boy in his study. "They gave me a place at Charity House, and then I took Kayden and Justice and took everyone with me. Ms. Penny did it all. ... I was away from them for a while before they could bring us back together."
The Flint location has more service than the Detroit location, as it has been operating since fall 2021.

The clinic is slowly working to spread the word about lifesaving services, empowering women and building faith.
Armbruster operates on the philosophy, "Whoever has my heart, I will partner with."
He calls Luke's Clinic a social service, not an evangelistic one. Several patients at Luke's Clinic have had abortions, and Luke's Clinic treats patients like before and after, Armbruster said.
